A reading for May, the month dedicated to Mary!

May is traditionally the month dedicated to Mary, and to mark the Marian month we propose the reading of "Maria Donna Normale. Un pensiero al giorno di papa Francesco per il mese mariano". A pocket-sized book that collects and proposes, day by day, 31 thoughts taken from the main homilies and magisterial texts of Pope Francis.

The Preface by Cardinal Angelo Comastri explains how this short book allows us to approach Our Lady through the words of the Holy Father. Mary, the mother who accompanies us on the journey of life, is the one who "had the courage to give life to God's dream" (p. 21); Pope Francis has always imagined her as a normal girl, with a normal education, even more so after the conception of Jesus, he considers her a normal woman and a normal mother.

Many times the Holy Father speaks of the Virgin Mary without hiding his great love for her, and in the same way he communicates to everyone his need - which is that of all the faithful - to have her close to him in their lives. The thoughts collected within the volume try to be a sure guide towards the Lord in His Church and allow us to affirm once again our "Yes". A simple and pure "Yes" like the one pronounced by Mary to God's will: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord: let it be done unto me according to thy word" (Lk 1:38).

At this time of trial, the book is an invitation to welcome the Virgin Mother - "bright star of joy and serenity", a woman capable of giving "to families, sanctuaries of love, the blessing and joy of life" (p. 24) - into our daily lives to help us translate our faith into a proclamation of the Gospel.

The book ends with a prayer to the Virgin: God's heavenly "way" of appearing to the world, and a space where you can write your own prayer dedicated to Mary.
