"God is always new". The book by Benedict XVI "spiritual synthesis of the writings" of the Pope Emeritus
Now available in bookshops is the volume God is always new (Libreria Editrice Vaticana, pp. 144, euro 13), edited by Luca Caruso, which offers a vast anthology around the main themes of the Christian faith in the words of Benedict XVI. Pope Francis, who signed the preface, describes this text as 'a sort of spiritual synthesis of Benedict XVI's writings: here his ability to show the depth of the Christian faith ever anew shines through'.
This book immerses the reader in the thought of a theologian and pastor Pope who, at the dawn of his pontificate, presented himself to the world, on 19 April 2005, as a "humble worker in the vineyard of the Lord" and who, abandoning himself totally to God, always cultivated the need for truth by highlighting the profound relationship between faith and reason. Through nine chapters on God and Jesus, on faith, on love, on prayer, on young people and the family, on hope, on holiness, on truth and freedom, and on joy, Benedict XVI paints the beauty of Christianity with a clear and ardent thought that questions one's relationship with God, "an event of love" that "illuminates the darkest nights".
God must be sought and listened to, Benedict XVI explains in this book, from which a vibrant call transpires: 'We must make God present again in our societies. It seems to me this is the first need: that God be present again in our lives, that we do not live as if we were autonomous, authorised to invent what freedom and life are'. "God loves his creature, man; he loves him even in his fall and does not abandon him to himself. He loves to the end".
"The depth of Joseph Ratzinger's thought, which was based on Sacred Scripture and the Fathers of the Church, is of help to us even today," says Pope Francis in his preface, wishing the reader to "find in these pages, traversed by the passionate and meek voice of a master of faith and hope, the grace of a new and life-giving encounter with Jesus."
