Marko Ivan Rupnik was born in Zadlog, Slovenia, in 1954. In 1973 he entered the Company of Jesus. He studied at the Fine Arts Academy in Rome and Theology at the Gregorian University in Rome where he specialised in Missiology, with a dissertation on Vjačeslav Ivanovič Ivanov carried out with f. T. Špidlík. He lives and works in Rome at the Centro Aletti of which he is director and responsible for the Atelier of spiritual art, which deals with liturgical art. He teaches at the Pontifical Gregorian University and at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute. He combines his activity as an artist and a theologian with the  more specifically pastoral aspect of his role, through conferences and preaching of courses of spiritual exercises.
