Ten women: Eve, Sarah, Hagar, Rachel, Miriam, Deborah, Ruth, Anna, Judith, Esther. A red thread runs through the life testimony of these fragile and strong women: the history of humanity is not condemned by God, it is a place of benevolence, of mercy. The mothers of Israel sing of a God who cares for the weak and the oppressed and does so through the weak and the oppressed themselves. Each of these mothers of Israel, by her word and her action, reveals God's active presence in the often dramatic tangle of human affairs. Her mission is to reveal that every historical time is an event of salvation and that, within the twisted plots of life, there is another protagonist at work, the Lord.
Two words accompany this journey: Bible and life because "the Bible is not a collection of sacred books to be studied, it is the Word of life to be sown. Let the Bible and life embrace each other, so that one may never be without the other" (Pope Francis).
With a leap in time we glimpse in every mother of Israel some silent steps of Mary of Nazareth who in the Magnificat reveals the passionate and tender heart of our God.
