Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio was born in 1938 in San Giuliano Milanese. In 1962, he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Milan. He received a licentiate in theology from the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy, a doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical University Gregoriana; as well as obtaining a diploma in moral theology at the Pontifical Academy Alfonsiana and a law degree at the Catholic University of the Holy Heart in Milan. The Advocate-General of the Curia of the Archdiocese of Milan and Pro-Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Milan, also held posts as professor of canon law at the Theological Faculty of Northern Italy and the Faculty of Canon Law of the Pontifical University Gregoriana. In 1993, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Milan and consecrated bishop on 22 May of the same year by Cardinal Martini. He was nominated President of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts on 15 February 2007. On 18 February 2012, he was created Cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI
