Juan Ignacio Arrieta Ochoa de Chinchetru, born on 10 April 1951 in Vitoria, Spain, has been Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts since 15 February 2007. He was Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross from its creation in 1984 until 1993, and again in 1995-1999. He founded and directed until 2002 the journal "Ius Ecclesiae". Since 2003 he has been Dean of the San Pio X Institute of Canon Law in Venice. He has served as canon prelate of the Apostolic Penitentiary, referendary of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, judge of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Vatican City State, and has been a consultant to the Congregation for the Clergy, the Pontifical Council for the Family and the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts. Bishop Arrieta is the author of many published works, including essays, commentaries and research papers in canon law.
