Preface by Giancarlo Bosetti
Andalusia in the Middle Ages is usually thought to have been the realm of seraphic inter-religious harmony: figures such as Averroes, Maimonides and Ramon Llull are considered to be the heroes of a period considered to have anticipated the Enlightenment. But was this really the case? Candiard believes that the richness of that cultural season is anything but a simple inter-religious syncretism or the intellectual surrender of the believer. On the contrary, Andalusia bears witness to the fact that the weakening of the religious conception of truth does not favour, indeed hinders, tolerance. Debate, even animated debate, Candiard argues, is more respectful than polite indifference, because it truly takes into account the other person and his ideas.
